SC to MD to NY....
Feels like it's been a lot longer than a week since my last post. Then again, it feels like it's been a lot shorter than that too, for much different reasons.
Graduation
The ceremony was actually really nice. I went out to dinner with Matt and his family beforehand and then just hung out with his family until we went to the stadium to find seats. I was sitting between his dad and his brother... they kept me entertained, I will say that. :-) It was a lot of fun, really. I love his family. They're so much fun. I mean, I probably would have hated them growing up with them, just because all families are like that and I can definitely see the things that would get on someone's nerves that spent all their time with them! But they're so great. Graduation only lasted about two hours -- that's shorter than Grimsley's, I think, and there were way more graduates at this one, so I was pretty happy. And even though I thought I might cry when Matt walked... I held it in... *sniff*... just kidding. :-P
Moving Out
Sunday I had to help out in North Village. I was conveniently paired with the boy, so I spent the WHOLE DAY (seriously, from a little before noon until after six) sitting outside his apartment checking people out. Sometimes I had his company, but really I was there not to "help" but to take his place so he had time to move out. So most of his time was spent helping his family get stuff out of his apartment, and most of mine was spent reading. Huzzah. We went to Steak 'n' Shake with his family afterwards, and that was a ton of fun. Matt and I almost always get the same guy serving us when we go there, and we love him -- his name is Brian, I think, and he's just fun. He seems to really like his job and that makes it nice for us. Well, he and Matt's mom were a perfect fit. Their senses of humor just matched right up. It was hilarious. Andrew and I were actually kind of in awe. :-)
That night was spent putting nearly all of my crap in my car in preparation for leaving Monday morning, and then packing the remainder of Matt's stuff up. It took us till 1:30 in the morning, but we got it all done. Monday, Matt and I were the last to leave because we had to stay till at least 9 to turn in our keys. We got on the road finally around 10:30. We took our time mostly going up to Maryland because we could, but we were definitely chugging along. Longest I've ever driven. Phew. By the time we got to Matt's house I was ready to collapse. Steve and Amy came over to give hugs and hellos, and we hung out for a bit, but, and I think Matt felt the same, I was just exhausted. So we really just bummed around instead of doing a whole bunch.
Maryland
I love Matt's house. And his family (I know, I already said that). Tuesday I got to meet his mom's parents, whom I hadn't yet met. Nice people. :-) And they had a beautiful house. You know how some houses look like they're just for show? Like you're really not supposed to touch anything? That's how this house was. I felt bad sitting on the sofa because it just looked so perfect!! We didn't stay for too long because we'd made plans to see a movie (we went to see The Break Up, which was good but... not the comedy you'd expect from Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston). After the movie we had dinner out, and when we drove back in we stopped at Steve's house for a while so Matt could say hi to his family and so we could hang out with Steve for a bit. We didn't stay long -- Steve works and gets up freakishly early so Matt's usually pretty good about making sure he goes to bed on time. :-P So yeah. We came back and watched movies. It was fun. We stayed up late just cuddling in front of the tv... it was nice.
Wednesday we went into Baltimore. I finally got to see the aquarium! :-) We had SO MUCH FUN. The aquarium was way cool, and afterwards we went up to the top of the World Trade Center in Baltimore and I got to see the amazing view. Then we had some time to kill before meeting his dad's parents for dinner, so we rented a paddleboat (in the shape of Chessie the Chesapeake Bay Monster -- I called her a dragon and was quickly corrected by the boy) and paddled our way around the Inner Harbor for half an hour. So random. So fun. Dinner was amazing, too -- we met his grandparents at Obrycki's (I sure hope I spelled that right) and I had my first Maryland steamed crabs. They were yummy -- but man, they had a LOT of pepper on them. I think my mouth still hasn't quite forgiven me. ;-) After dinner we stopped at his grandparents' house and I got the grand tour -- this house is ridiculous. It's really really old and they have a lot of antique furniture -- walking through the house was like walking through a mini-Biltmore Estate. It just had that feel to it, like it should have been roped off so no one could touch anything. It's an amazing house. And I covet it, and more so some of the antiques and things they have in it. God. Gorgeous.
New York
Thursday I left MD. *skips the part where Kira is extremely sad and depressed about leaving* The 5 hours to New York were a cakewalk compared with the 9 hours in the car on Monday, so that was nice. And Mimi and Papa were, obviously, thrilled to see me. I get the big bedroom upstairs, unless there is a couple who visits and needs it, so that's nice. I pretty much crashed on Thursday night, and Friday.... ooooh. Friday. Yesterday was when I discovered that the full-time waitressing job I thought I had is actually not so full-time, and not so guaranteed, either. The woman who finally called me said that it would be "a few weeks" before I could even come in and get trained. (Not good. NOT GOOD.) Long story (and boy, is it long) short, I finally was able to convince the woman that I deserved to be trained soon so that when business starts picking up I can start working immediately.
And to be fair, it's not her fault. The guy who hired me seems to be a total schmuck. He overhired by a whole lot, so none of the servers are getting more than two days a week anyway; he hired ONLY people with no experience whatsoever; he hired people who aren't old enough to serve alcohol (pointless in a restaurant that... serves... alcohol...); and he basically told the woman I spoke to that he hadn't ACTUALLY HIRED ME. Which is total bullshit. And I have the emails to prove it. But whatever.
It's been kind of a lousy first couple of days up here at the lake. I mean, it's a big adjustment already, but it would be a lot easier with pretty weather and, oh yeah, a JOB. But the weather's been shitty -- my grandfather described this morning as "colder than a witch's tit" and yesterday it rained all day long. But today it actually cleared up a lot, and while it wasn't warm by any means, it was pretty out. And tonight's moon was really something. Just beautiful.
And on our way back from dinner I saw like five deer. Cool, huh? :-)
Matt and Steve and Amy are coming to visit on Thursday. I may be working tomorrow. I'll be job hunting some more on Monday and Tuesday. I'll be working for real on Wednesday.
I can make it. :-)
